Alternative Energy Sources

Alternative energy sources is a term that refers to any usable energy sources that are aimed at replacing fuel sources with undesired consequences. Examples of alternative energy are: wind, solar energy, biomass energy and geothermal energy. On the other hand, undesired energy sources include compounds that emit high carbon dioxide. The gas is responsible for the global warming because it depletes the ozone layer.

Wind power has been exploited for thousands of years as one of the alternative energy sources. It was used by the Persians in wind mills to grind grain and pump water.

Wind energy is generated by harnessing wind by use of wind mills. Wind is formed when the earth’s surface is heated unevenly. For example: the equatorial region receives more heat as compared to the South Pole. The heat tries to move to colder regions and the ultimate result is wind.

Wind farms have been developed in upland places like Wales but the idea has not been embraced well due to visual and noise pollution associated with it. When the energy is harnessed, it can easily be converted to mechanical energy. The energy can be utilized in work such as grinding of grain, pumping of water and milling of lumber.

Wind energy is free and clean. It is also non-polluting. The process of producing the energy does not lead to emission of harmful by-products. The energy is also renewable and involves a simple technology in terms of building and designing of wind mils. In terms of cost, the energy is relatively cheap as compared to other alternative energy sources. It is also safe unlike the carbon dioxide emitting energy resources.

The disadvantages of wind energy are: it produces noise, affects bird’s population and is inconstant. Currently, developed countries are embracing the use of alternative energy sources.
